The Show

2018 is going to be an exciting year!

Once again the skies over Culpeper County will roar with the thunder of historic and high-performance aircraft this October 13th, along with an expanded program that promises fun for the whole family. Free again to the public this year, the show with heart-stopping stunts and precision flying performed by historically significant aircraft and some of the nation’s best pilots. With a week of spectacular aviation events planned, we are sure that you too will be bitten by the “aviation bug”.

The week will start off with some FAST (Formation and Safety Team) formation training and recertification which is an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approved program. Now don’t be startled when you see the warbirds flying over town and the surrounding rural areas around Culpeper, they are doing just what planes of that era were meant to do.

Last year’s Air Fest marked the inaugural launch of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program, which was held Wednesday and Thursday prior to the Air Fest and we’re happy to announce that it was a great success! Over 600 5th grade students were exposed to aviation related technology exhibits, and this year we’re expanding the program even further!

The Culpeper Air Fest is the largest annual event in Culpeper, and we’re proud to announce an exciting lineup for 2018. This show is not only a fun day for the whole family, it’s a significant educational experience for future aviators as well.

Dan Haug

Culpeper Air Fest Chairman

In addition to Saturday’s activities, the Air Fest will again serve as home base on Friday, October 12th for the Potomac Flight, a flyover of Washington D.C’s greatest landmarks and majestic monuments by historic WW-II era aircraft. We expect this year to have well over twenty aircraft, including two DC-3/C47s.

On Saturday the 13th, our week long aviation journey will culminate starting at 9 a.m. when gates open with the buddy boxing event hosted by the Culpeper Barnstormers and their fabulous model aircraft. October 13th is also the GIRL’S IN AVIATION DAY sponsored by Women in Aviation International. We will have special booths set up just for these festivities.

Then on to the full scale show around noon. Spectators will be excited to see the return of the one and only civilian owned Sea Harrier aka SHAR flown by Marine Corps LTC (ret) Art Nalls. The Harrier will fly in a “Heritage” flight with a WW-II era British Spitfire and Hurricane. The show will continue with regular performers Bealton’s Flying Circus, and Scott Francis in his MXS – one of only 12 MXS aircraft in existence. Culpeper’s own native Steve Nixon will perform his riveting act in the R-22 Helicopter, and 2017 crowd favorite Manfred Radius will dazzle the audience with his aerobatic glider act. New to the show this year will be a spectacular Friday night air show exclusively for our sponsors, featuring aerobatic performances using pyrotechnics that will leave the audience speechless.

This year we are implementing a rain date for the Culpeper Air Fest. If weather becomes an issue this year, the rain date will be Sunday, October 14th. In the case of inclement weather, stay tuned to our website and social media outlets for updates.

Cruisin For Heroes

Cruisin For Heroes will again be presenting a “By Invitation Only” Classic Vehicle Display to benefit the Fisher House Foundation.

Cruisin For Heroes is a group that provides vehicles displays to raise awareness and funding for charities that support our Military and First Responders.

Fisher House provides a “Home Away From Home” for military families to be close to loved ones during hospitalization.

Cruisin For Heroes has been providing their nostalgic family friendly display of a wide variety of classic and specialty vehicles at the entrance to the air show for the past 10 years. Rolling Thunder will also be part of the display and clowns, provided by “Luv-N-Laffs Clown Alley”, will be entertaining children of all ages.

In addition to the fantastic assortment of vintage and classic aircraft that will be in the show, Cruisin For Heroes affords everyone attending an opportunity to stroll among many vintage, classic and specialty vehicles whose owners are always eager to answer questions about their special ride and share their hobby with the public.

This year’s display is being sponsored locally by Pixley Classics & Restoration.

Access to the display is free and any support you may wish to contribute to the Fisher House Foundation for our Military Heroes is appreciated.

Culpeper Airport Community Educational Opportunities Continue to Expand

While attending this year’s Culpeper Air Fest be sure to ask about the ever expanding CJR Tenant based volunteer programs that have been providing Aircraft Maintenance Training for over 12 years. Powered by the non-profit Altron Foundation Inc. and fueled by the CJR community, local businesses and individual aviation enthusiasts, we continue to provide career aircraft maintenance training through hands-on experience using local aircraft and under construction plans from Bearhawk Patrol.

We invite those students in the Culpeper area that are interested, to contact us to see for themselves if this opportunity is right for them. You may email the programs leader directly, Tom Hazel at warbirdmechanic@hotmail.com or contact the Culpeper Airport Office at 540-825-8280.

R/C Model Aviation

The morning Radio Control (R/C) model aviation portion of the 2018 Culpeper Airfest will again address all aspects of the hobby.

The members of several northern Virginia model aircraft clubs will participate in an all day show-and-tell static display of various flyable scale, historic, classic, WWI, WWII, present day, and jet model aircraft.

The flying day will start out when the gates open with experienced model aircraft pilots providing hands-on “buddy box” experience of flying fixed wing model aircraft for any of the Air Fest guests interested in giving it a try.
